Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham, also known as Marakkar: Arabian Sea Lion, is an upcoming historical epic war movie co-written and directed by Priyadarshan in the Indian Malayalam language. Set in the 16th century, the film is based on Kunjali Marakkar IV’s battle exploits the naval leader of the Zamorin of Calicut. Kunjali Marakkars coordinated the Indian coast’s first naval defense by protecting Calicut for nearly a century from the Portuguese invasion. Ani Sasi co‐wrote the screenplay. Aashirvad Cinemas produced the film with the co-producers Moonshot Entertainments and Optimistic Party.
The movie stars Mohanlal in the title role as Kunjali Marakkar IV. Main photography began on 1 December 2018 and ended at the end of March 2019, with a bulk of the film shot at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad. Marakkar: Arabikadalinte Simham is Malayalam’s most expensive film ever made, with a budget of approximately 100 crore. The film is due to be released internationally on March 26, 2020.
